Black Belly of the Tarantula
Italy, 1971, Dir. Paolo Cavara, Italian Video, 98 min. with live translation!
Cavara's quintessential giallo kicks off the 'giallo night'. Starring Giancarlo Giannini of recent Hannibal fame as a detective investigation a series of murders whose unique modus opperandi involves paralyzing the victims with a long needle and then slicing their stomachs open while they are fully aware of what's happening to them. Director Cavara proved that he is one of the masters of the genre with his later, equally strong giallo Too Much Fear.

Twitch of the Death Nerve
Italy, 1971, Dir. Mario Bava, 16mm 82 min. English
Mario Bava's infamous bodycount trendsetter takes place in a small seaside community where a murderer is eliminating all those who might get in the way of their plans to cash in on the fortune of an elderly, wheelchair-bound woman. This was the prototype for the American slasher film, with 13 murders, all creative and gory. Bava masterfully creates sheer terror in broad daylight when the first of the teenagers is offed by the gore-friendly murderer.

Friday the 13th
USA, 1980, Dir, Sean S. Cunningham, 35mm, English
Two films before the hockey mask was even thought of, a killer was stalking the grounds of Camp Crystal Lake offing numerous cavorting camp counsellors for the sins of their predecessors. Counsellors die one by one, in ways remarkably like their counterparts in Twitch of the Death Nerve. The quintessential American slasher film wher all the people who hate Kevin Bacon get to see
him die an agonizing death. Good, filthy fun, an endurance test for the faint-hearted and a laugh for purveyors of eighties cheese.

Friday July 13th, midnight at Pacific Cinematheque
