The Criminal Cinema in association with the
Yerba Buena Center for The Arts presents:
WALKING WOUNDED: THE FILMS OF LECH KOWALSKI
November 26th-December 1st at the Blinding Light!! Cinema
Admission $6 per film

(Cinemuerte or Blinding Light membership required)

The Criminal Cinema is proud to present the first-ever Canadian retrospective of the films of Lech Kowalski, organised with the assistance of San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Kowalski has spent over two decades in darkness, documenting underground personalities and cultures. His films are raw, unflinching portraits of gritty, black-eyed and snaggle-toothed drug and punk scenes. His work is often overwhelmingly intense, conjuring up a phantasmagorical yet entirely realistic vision of a nightmarish underworld.

Gringo (Story of a Junkie)
1984, 85m Beta SP
Gringo follows the title character John Spacely, a fixture on the streets of the Lower East Side. His daily routine takes him on a never-ending search for dope and finding a safe spot to read comic books. The scenes of narcotic dealing and using are totally unglamorized, as are those individuals who populate the streets of this closed (at the time) community.
Screens:
Tuesday Nov. 26th 7:30pm
Friday Nov. 29th 7:30pm

Boot Factory
2000, 88m Beta SP
"Imagine if the Sex Pistols made boots instead of music," says the director. His film is about Krakow bootmakers who run their business like punk rockers, living by their own rules, making boots by hand and bobbing their heads in unison to the songs of their favourite bands. As they struggle to keep their tiny business going amid drunken parties, marriage and drug addiction, Kowalski reveals the simmering tension of their lives and the release they find in music.
Screens:
Thursday Nov. 28th 7:30pm

D.O.A.
1980, 89m Beta SP
DOA is the best and most authentic punk film ever made. A brash, intense document of the first US Sex Pistols tour in 1978, featuring live performances by the Sex Pistols, The Rich Kids, X-Ray Spex, Sham 69 and Generation X. Preceded by the short film "Breakdance Test".
Screens:
Wednesday Nov. 27th 9:30pm
Friday Nov. 29th 9:30pm

Rock Soup
1991, 81m Beta SP
Rock Soup is a dirty, haunting look at the homeless in Tompkins Square Park and their fight against City Hall's plan to close down their soup kitchen.
Preceded by the short film "Chico and the People"
Screens:
Wednesday Nov. 27th 7:30pm

Hey Is Dee Dee Home?
2002, 90m Beta SP
A work-in-progress, Hey is Dee Dee Home is an intense portrait of Dee Dee Ramone, bassist and one of the founding members of seminal punk band The Ramones, who died of a drug overdose in June 2002.
Screens:
Thursday Nov. 28th 9:30pm
Sunday Dec. 1st 9:45pm

THE CRIMINAL CINEMA PRESENTS A HALLOWEEN MIDNIGHT SCREENING OF DRIVE-IN CLASSIC I DRINK YOUR BLOOD

On October 31st at Midnight the Hollywood Theatre becomes the latest home for the transient Criminal Cinema, where they will present a midnight screening of the notorious cult classic I DRINK YOUR BLOOD. David Durston's infamous 70's chunkblower is about a group of sadistic, satanic hippies under the dangerous influence of LSD who wreak havoc in a small rural community. When they dose grandpa with LSD, his twisted grandson gets revenge by injecting meat pies with rabies and offering them to the hippies -- who are quickly transformed into maniacal foaming-at-the-mouth cannibals! Preceding the film will be a short multimedia performance by NY Filmwurld who accompany classic monster movie clips with raw, lysergic Triphop. Admission is $5 18+ only

Friday-Sunday, November 1-3
Seattle Premiere!

INTERNATIONAL HORROR FILM SHORTS
Co-presented with Cinemuerte International Horror Film Festival
*film descriptions provided by Cinemuerte founder Kier-La Janisse

PROGRAM 1
Plays daily at 7 pm
OF WOLF & LIMB
(Corey Adams & Alex Craig, Canada, 2000, BetaSp, 10 min.)
A wolfman takes a severed leg to the streets in an attempt, according to the
filmmakers, to let "a single idea evolve on its own accord." Come explore
this enigmatic claim.

NOCTURNE
(Jay Johnson and Clancy Dennehy, Canada, 2001, VHS, 8 min.)
Filmmaker in Attendance, Saturday ONLY
This Brothers Quay-inspired stop motion piece sees a battered, filthy baby
doll trapped in a dystopian netherworld where he is subject to his own
debilitating delusions and paranoid hallucinations. Based on Ranier Maria
Rilke's The Wax Dolls of Lotte Pritzel

L'ILYA
(Tomoya Sato, Japan, 2000, 16mm, 39 min.)
Ilya is a seemingly well-adjusted woman with a promising career, videotaping
suicides for projection in trendy nightclubs. People committing suicide
contact her to volunteer as subjects, speak a few last words and then end
their lives in a variety of ways. Ilya neither assists nor attempts to stop
them; she merely records. This amazing film does what its character does,
which is to examine death from a sadly detached perspective. "At present, to
think about death is considered dark and cruel," says Sato, "but to think
about death is to think about life."

PROGRAM 2
Plays daily at 9 pm
CATHARSIS
(Helene Cattet and Bruno Forani, Belgium, 2000, 35mm, 3 min.)
This bizarre Belgian experimental take on the giallo (Italian horror)
formula employs still photography to tell its lushly photographed tale of
sadistic murder.

EXTREMISM BREAKS MY BALLS
(Nicolas Debot, Sweden, 2000, 35mm, 5 min.)
Nicolas Debot's faux-government propaganda film opens with a naked couple
preparing for intercourse on a bed when a team of fascist police bust in and
arrest the man for committing adultery. A lengthy castration ensues.

FLAT 'N' FLUFFY
(Ben Boucher, Canada, 2001, BetaSP, 7 min.)
Two stoners in a shitty hippie band can't seem to stop running over an old
lady's dog. Massive carnage ensues.

CHANNELING ALICE
(J. Cody Lucido, Seattle, 2002, DV, 18 min.)
Filmmaker in attendance
In this paranormal documentary, a team of ghost hunters investigate and
capture evidence of the haunting of the Bush House hotel in Index, WA.

NEKOJIRO-SO
(Tatsuo Sato, Japan, 2000, BetaSP, 33 min.)
One of the most haunting pieces of animation I have ever seen. Based on
characters created by enigmatic artist Nekojiro, this surrealist dreamscape
follows a little kitty named Nyata whose sister1s soul has been partially
stolen by the god of death. Nyata and her sister take a walk that transforms
into something epic and hallucinatory. The only indicators of verbal
communication are bizarre speech bubbles accompanied by strange noises. The
film is indelibly sad, and gives us a glimpse into the headspace of its
creator.

Plays at THE LITTLE THEATRE in Seattle, WA, The Little Theatre is located
on Capitol Hill at 608 19th Avenue East, on 19th between the streets Roy and
Mercer. Tickets for shows go on sale a half hour before show time. Ticket
prices are $7 general admission for adults, $4.50 for Northwest Film Forum
members, and $5 for seniors and children. The Little Theatre show time
information line is 206.675.2055. To contact the administrative offices of
the Northwest Film Forum, call 206.329.2629. Visit our website at

Complete with old-school four-wheeled skating (Because the Stardust has a limited number of four-wheeled skates, bring your own if you've got 'em), all your favorite tunes from the heyday of rollerboogie (there will NOT be a predominance of disco, so don't worry -- all musical genres will be aptly represented), and screenings of rollerskating classics on the multiple televisions posited all over the Stardust! Answers to some popular questions
Where are the movies playing?
The festival takes place entirely at the Pacific Cinematheque, 1131 Howe Street, downtown Vancouver, one street west of Granville, between Davie and Helmcken near the Law Courts. map

Where do I buy tickets?
There are no advance tickets, only passes can be bought ahead of time. Tickets for that day's screenings are available half an hour before the first showtime of the day. Passes can be bought for $60 at Black Dog Video (3451 Cambie St. Vancouver), and include the price of the Cinematheque membership of $6 (see question below) if you do not already have one. You will still be required to fill out the appropriate membership form upon entering the theatre.

When is the best time to buy tickets?
It is best to arrive half an hour before the screening, or if possible, stop by at the first screening to buy tickets for later ones that night.

Why do I have to buy a Pacific Cinematheque membership in order to see the Cinemuerte films?
By purchasing a yearly membership, you not only are entitled to great obscure films for a year, but you are also in effect joining a private club. In doing so, the films you see are not required to be passed through the ratings board for review, because you are no longer considered 'the public', and have waived your rights to be protected by classification Board guidelines. All this means is that we can show films like Cannibal Holocaust without getting in trouble. If you were not a member, it would be legally prohibited for us to be showing you these films, as ratings are required for all films accessible to the public in Canada. The membership is $6, but this enables the Cinematheque to keep bringing in expensive, obscure films, and sometimes special guests. Please note that if you purchase a CineMuerte PASS, your membership fee is included, although you will still be required to fill out the appropriate membership form.

Where do I find the latest updates on any show changes or events?
Check this site often. Shows that are cancelled get posted on the site, as well as in the Cinematheque lobby and at Black Dog Video (3451 Cambie St. Vancouver).
