WELCOME
TO CINEMUERTE 2003
International Fantastic Film Festival
This year marks CineMuerte's fifth
anniversary, and it's remarkable to me how far the
festival has come in that short time. Do any of you
remember the first year? How I managed to turn such
a welfare video-series into a mid-level film festival
complete with guests, premieres and top-notch merchandising
is no doubt due to the support of all of you, as
well as my stable of indispensable and defatiguable
film fan assistants. This year's lineup is better
than ever, with 6 new matinee time-slots added (I'm
banking on the stereotype that horror film fans
don't like to be outside in the sun), and a guest
appearance by none other than the venerable character
actor JOHN SAXON!!!
You may have noticed that I've discarded
the word 'horror film' from the poster; there
have been qualms about my programming in the past,
and about the debatable place that some of the films
have in the horror genre. In a post-modern world
it gets harder and harder to categorize cleanly and
to everyone's satisfaction. So I've gone the European
route, re-labelled the festival 'fantastic' (which
still may draw criticism given the 'reality horror'
of some of the films on the roster this year), and
I'm throwing caution to the wind and hoping you'll
go on this crazy ride with me.
Sincerely,
Kier-La Janisse

Festival passes will
be available mid-June (stay tuned to the site for an exact date
when mid-June gets closer). There is a slight price-hike this
year, because 6 new time-slots have been added (making a total
of 27 features) so that you can revel in even more horror, chaos,
catastrophism, filth, depravity and sublimity than ever before.
As such, passes will be $70.00, and individual tickets
at the door will be $7.00.
Programming for this year is extremely broad, and
caters to a variety to cult tastes. In Europe, genre festivals
refer to themselves as 'Fantastic', which opens them up to
horror, thrillers, sci-fi, fantasy, and all types of cult
films. While CineMuerte's criteria is still decidedly dark,
we're definitely headed more in this direction.
See you soon,
Kier-La Janisse

THE COLOURS OF DARKNESS IS IN NEGOTIATION
FOR DISTRIBUTION WITH AN OFFICIAL GAME COMPANY!
While this puts a temporary hold on all sales though this website
(not counting orders made prior to this announcement), this means
that as of next spring, quality-controlled mass-production of the
game should be in motion and you can get your game in a tin as opposed
to a flimsy box. You can email koroner@hotmail.com to
keep updated on this process, but for the time being orders cannot
be accepted. THANKS FOR THE ONGOING SUPPORT! |

Hey!
You can get this year's cool psychedelic poster
for a measly $5.00 at Black
Dog Video or at the Cinematheque during
the festival. The image is exactly as shown
above and is also on the deluxe program. That
girl kinda looks like Kier-la, no? |

Answers to some popular questions
Where are the movies playing?
The festival takes place entirely at the Pacific Cinematheque,
1131 Howe Street, downtown Vancouver, one street west
of Granville, between Davie and Helmcken near the Law Courts.

Where do I buy tickets?
There are no advance tickets, only passes can be bought ahead
of time. Tickets for that day's screenings are available half
an hour before the first showtime of the day. Passes can be
bought for $70 at Black Dog Video (3451 Cambie St. Vancouver),
and include the price of the Cinematheque membership of $7
(see question below) if you do not already have one. You will
still be required to fill out the appropriate membership form
upon entering the theatre.
When is the best time to buy tickets?
It is best to arrive half an hour before the screening, or
if possible, stop by at the first screening to buy tickets
for later ones that night.
Why do I have to buy a Pacific Cinematheque
membership in order to see the Cinemuerte films?
By purchasing a yearly membership, you not only are entitled
to great obscure films for a year, but you are also in effect
joining a private club. In doing so, the films you see are
not required to be passed through the ratings board for review,
because you are no longer considered 'the public', and have
waived your rights to be protected by classification Board
guidelines. All this means is that we can show films like
Cannibal Holocaust
without getting in trouble. If you were not a member, it would
be legally prohibited for us to be showing you these films,
as ratings are required for all films accessible to the public
in Canada. The membership is $6, but this enables the Cinematheque
to keep bringing in expensive, obscure films, and sometimes
special guests. Please note that if you purchase a CineMuerte
PASS, your membership fee is included, although you will still
be required to fill out the appropriate membership form.
Where do I find the latest updates on any
show changes or events?
Check this site often. Shows that are cancelled get posted
on the site, as well as in the Cinematheque lobby and at Black
Dog Video (3451 Cambie St. Vancouver).
