International Fantastic Film Festival
CINEMUERTE 2004: Oct. 27-31
Pacific Cinematheque - Vancouver, BC

Western Canada's premiere genre festival CineMuerte
is back. And this year's event promises an even more
hectic and eclectic mix of retro obscurities and heart-stopping
(literally) premieres than ever before.
Festival organizer Kier-La Janisse is pleased to bring
together a great selection of internationally acclaimed
films, including Lee Soo-yeon's The Uninvited, Jim
Van Bebber's epic masterpiece The Manson Family, and
Oscar-nominee Bill Plympton's latest animated feature
Hair High.
This year's festival will feature more special guests
than in years previous, on hand to not only meet and
greet fans, but also available for interviews throughout
the festival.
Guests this year include Jim Van Bebber, cult director
Jeff Lieberman (Blue Sunshine), actress Millie Perkins
(The Diary of Anne Frank, Wild in the Streets), Drive-In
legend and Jayne Mansfield's ex Matt Cimber, original
Texas Chainsaw alumnus Edwin Neal, Spanish director
Christian Molina, legendary Montreal comic artist Rick
Trembles and Korean director Lee Soo-yeon.
Also new this year is Bloodshot - the 48 hour Horror
Film Challenge. Aspiring filmmakers have 48 hours to
write, shoot and edit a 10-minute horror film. The
contest will take place Oct. 22-24, and the completed
films will be viewed on Friday Oct. 29 at the festival.
Celebrity judges in the house will include LYNN FERO
(Vice President of Paramount Pictures) and EDWIN NEAL
(the Hitchhiker from the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE).
Full details about the contest and how it will work
will be available on www.cinemuerte.com by Oct.1, 2004.
Winning films will be sent to Austin, TX where they
will be eligible for the Grand Prize, in a competition
judged by rogue director ROBERT RODRIGUEZ (From Dusk
Til Dawn).

ED NEAL later in the afternoon on Oct. 30.
Interpret that however you like. But I will warn you: Ed is psyched.

over the women and genre directors of the world.

largest movie poster collections, Ed's career
runs an impressive gamut that includes working
with Oliver Stone, Bob Balaban and Sean Cunningham,
as well as regular voice work on cartoons and

After what seemed to be an indefinite
hiatus, Western Canada's premiere genre film festival
is back by popular demand. While in truncated
form - 15 films as opposed to the usual 30 - this
year's event promises an even more hectic and
eclectic mix of retro obscurities and heart-stopping
premieres than ever before.
Festival director Kier-La Janisse
attributes the festival's brevity this year to
the fact that she has been living abroad for the
last year, programming for the renowned Alamo
Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, Texas. Spearheading
events as varied as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Reunion (at the original house, no less), The
Warriors reunion, hosting noir babe Ann Savage
in person for a screening of Detour, and even
A Small Faces/Faces night with former Face Ian
McLagan in person, has kept Kier-La pretty busy.
Films and guests for this year are
not confirmed yet, but on the slate for CineMuerte
VI are Frankenstein: The True Story (the ULTIMATE
3-hour 1970s made-for-television epic, in a fully
UNCUT 16mm version rarely seen); Christian Molina's
homage to Spanish horror icon Paul Naschy Rojo
Sangre; and the devastating backwoods-horror exploitation
staple Poor Pretty Eddie, which is elevated to
high art by the masterful editing of frequent
Donald Cammell collaborator Frank Mazzola.
Also new this year is the 48hour
Horror Film Challenge: as a means to accommodate
and encourage local horror filmmakers, CineMuerte
presents its own version of the filmmaking craze
that has been sweeping the globe over the last
few years - 48 hours to write, shoot and edit
a 10-minute horror film. The contest will take
place Oct. 22-24, and the completed films will
be viewed on Friday Oct. 29 at the festival. Full
details about the contest and how it will work
will be available on the CineMuerte website by
Oct.1, 2004.
